Welcome Message from the Premier of South Australia

On behalf of the Government of South Australia, I extend a very warm welcome to the delegates of the 24th International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage Congress and 73rd International Executive Committee Meeting 2022.

This is the first time that the International Congress has been held in the southern hemisphere and it seems especially appropriate that Adelaide should play host to this milestone event.

The Adelaide Convention Centre sits on the banks of the Torrens River, the water source that sustained the original settlement and which is still a vital part of Adelaide’s civic life.

With South Australia the driest state in the driest populated continent on Earth, we are acutely aware of the vital importance of irrigation and water management to sustain life, support agriculture and industry, and to help ensure a sustainable future. Indeed, our public utility SA Water was recently honoured at the iTnews Benchmark Awards for its award-winning smart irrigation initiative, which uses real-time, site-specific data to optimise water efficiency.

Finding ways to increase our “drop for crop” is one of the important factors that have allowed our state to thrive and prosper, and which recently elevated Adelaide to rank as the third most liveable city in the world by the Economist, and the most liveable in Australia.

Our world-renowned wine regions are a triumph of astute water management and excellence in irrigation – although there are many other, more delicious reasons to visit the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, the Adelaide Hills or any of our other nearby wine and food districts, for those who choose to spend some time exploring our city and state.

You come at a transformative time in Australia’s water management processes and we look forward to the insights and strategies that will take root at this year’s event.

We look forward to welcoming you in October to meet with international colleagues, to share knowledge, and to experience what Adelaide has to offer. We hope your time with us is stimulating, productive, and thoroughly enjoyable.

The Hon Peter Malinauskas MP
PREMIER OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA
